An idea described by Alfred Hitchcock. It represents an artefact (person, item, piece of information) of crucial importance for the plot, however unknown to the audience. The audience doesn’t have to know the MacGuffin to enjoy and fully understand the film as the MacGuffin does not influence the main plot. It is mainly meant to provide motivation for some actions.
