shooting ratio

Posted on February 2, 2012

The ratio between the duration of all footage shot and the duration of the final product.

A 25 minute film with 50 minutes of footage has a ratio of 2:1.

Shooting ratio is very important when shooting on film stock, due to the high price of film stock. It is much cheaper on video tape and almost ‘free’ on digital, as hard drives used for storing the footage are reusable.

The shooting ratio remains important, however, as an efficiency measure.
