Cinéma vérité (truthful cinema) is a style in documentary filmmaking.
It is widely accepted, that a cinema verite filmmaker and his or her camera should be that catalysts of situations.
This style accepts interaction between the filmmaker and the subject (as opposed to fly on the wall documentaries). The camera is always acknowledged, often confrontational or even provocative (e.g. the filmmaker initiates a situation that the character knows nothing of, then the filmmaker films the characters natural reaction).

Some of the filmmakers associated with this style:
Dziga Vertov
Jean Rouch
Robert Drew
Linda Goode Bryant
Jon Alpert
Albert and David Maysels
