film noir

A style or genre in American film created and used mostly in the 40s and 50s.

Films in this group avoid clear distinctions between right and wrong. Mysterious and cruel situations are often presented. Happy end is avoided. Moral evaluation of characters is avoided.

In visual style: the use of darkness (cities at night) and shades, stron contrast, mostly vertical and diagonal lines (little horizontal lines), low position of film lighting.

As it is a very interesting genre we recommend reading some more at Wikipedia.
