rights clearance

Posted on January 25, 2012

The process of obtaining rights to use intellectual property within a film or TV production (or music, web content, art, literature, multimedia etc.). One of the key business processes in film production, very complex. In combined works (like film) it requires great attention given to all elements that may be protected (patent, copyright, trademark, privacy, defamation, publicity, image etc.).

In film the following rights may need to be obtained: songs, music, sound; works of art hanging on the walls of a flat, trademarks if the character visits a shopping mall. And these are only the most obvious examples.

Also known as licensing.
